Flyin’ Ryan hit the high banks of Southern National for the first time during the track’s traditional Thanksgiving Classic event weekend. The three day event showcased driving talent among multiple divisions of racers from the area and surrounding states. For Joyner, this weekend was extra special, as he was finally able to turn laps in front of the hometown crowd. Growing up and living less than 10 miles from the track, this was an event that was in the mind of Joyner for a long time and would be a great means of capping off the seventeen year old’s rookie season behind the wheel of a late model stock car.
Ryan started night number one off with a solid second place qualifying spot in the Limited Late Model division. Mixing it up among the top three during the entire 40 lap “Dash For Cash” event, Joyner was part of a three-wide battle around the 4/10th mile track for the final two laps of the race, ultimately crossing the start/finish line in the third spot. Such hard racing was certainly the talk of the town afterwards and added energy to the remaining weekend’s events.
On Sunday, Joyner once again took to the track in the Limited Late Model division’s 75 lap event. Starting from the third position, Ryan looked strong throughout, running among the top five until being involved in a two car incident while battling for the second spot with eleven laps remaining. Once the caution was cleared, Ryan was able to rebound to sixth place among the final running order.
